Environmental Industry of the United States - Overview by State and Metropolitan Statistical Area
Foreword
FOREWORD

In response to continuing requests for updated information, the Office of Environmental Technologies Industries is pleased to release the fourth annual edition of the Environmental Industry of the United States. Contained in this volume are statistical profiles of the U.S. environmental industry’s revenues, jobs, and exports for each of the 50 states and for 49 metropolitan statistical areas. These data contribute to the ongoing efforts to expand U.S. exports and jobs through public-private partnerships in the environmental business sector.

The data for 1999 show continued growth in the production and sales of U.S. environmental goods and services. In 1999, total revenues for the industry increased by five percent to $196.5 billion; the number of jobs in the industry increased by 44,815 to 1,389,638. The U.S. industry exported almost 11% of the total goods and services that it produced in 1999. U.S. environmental exports have more than doubled since 1993, rising from $9.6 billion to $21.3 billion in 1999.

Environmental technologies, goods, and services continue to constitute an important and growing sector within the global economy. It is projected that the global market will grow to $545 billion by the year 2004. The Department of Commerce is pleased to provide support to this important industrial sector.
