The overall site contains an estimated quantity of approximately 550,000 cubic metres of sediment. This is contaminated with PAHs, PCBs, hetrocyclic compounds and other organic compounds, heavy metals and raw sewage. These materials arose from coking operations, coal gas production, other historical industrial uses, and raw sewage discharge.

The objective of this demonstration initiative is to identify and demonstrate applied and proven technologies that are capable of removing, transporting and treating/remediating the contaminated sediment in a safe, cost effective manner. Demonstrations will be completed by early 2002.
