Removal of Pond Sediment in Canada

Removal, Transport and Remediation Technologies Demonstration for Sydney Tar Ponds Sediment

The Sydney Tar Ponds form part of the Muggah Creek Estuary of Sydney Harbor, in Nova Scotia, Canada. The Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Public Works, under the Federal \ Provincial \ Municipal Cost Share Agreement, will be issuing two documents shortly relating to this site:

A Request for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the demonstration of sediment remediation technologies for the Tar Ponds sediment.

A Request for Proposals (RFP) for the demonstration of removal and transportation technologies, suitable for movement of the Tar Ponds sediment, and

The overall site contains an estimated quantity of approximately 550,000 cubic metres of sediment. This is contaminated with PAHs, PCBs, hetrocyclic compounds and other organic compounds, heavy metals and raw sewage. These materials arose from coking operations, coal gas production, other historical industrial uses, and raw sewage discharge.

The objective of this demonstration initiative is to identify and demonstrate applied and proven technologies that are capable of removing, transporting and treating/remediating the contaminated sediment in a safe, cost effective manner. Demonstrations will be completed by early 2002.
